Sorting & advertising

How books appear in your feed.

Matching books first

Search terms and filters also apply to ads. A complete ISBN only shows listings for that edition. Sold, reserved, hidden and not yet approved listings do not appear in the feed.

With “Recommended”, exact title and author matches matter more than matches only in the description. Recency, photos, description, binding and shipping details come next. Sellers you follow get a small advantage on the home page. Similarly relevant listings from different sellers alternate; older books regularly get a spot.

You choose the order

  • Recommended: relevant and complete listings, new and older books.
  • Newest first: publication time or the most recent paid bump.
  • Book price: low to high or high to low, with shipping added separately. Ads do not change the order of regular results.
  • Only sellers you follow: only books from sellers you follow.

What does advertising do?

Ad typeEffect
BumpThe listing’s recency is set once to the booking start time. This affects recommendations and “Newest first”.
Daily bumpSeven updates at 24-hour intervals. Once the period ends, the original listing date applies again.
HighlightA prominent border and label on your listing; no additional ranking advantage.
Top placementUp to two books in a rotating ad block before the regular results.
GalleryUp to three books as larger cards between groups of results.
ShelfUp to five matching books from the same seller in a shared Shelf. The selection rotates with each visit and search from up to 15 chosen books. The link leads to the seller’s full profile.
Pay-per-click or sale-based advertisingOne matching book in a labelled ad placement between results. The billing model does not give it a higher ranking.

Each section of up to 30 regular book cards contains no more than two additional ad blocks with a combined maximum of six books. When there are few results, there are fewer or no ad placements. Each seller gets at most one additional ad block per section. The same listing appears only once per feed.

Ads rotate between relevant sellers and bookings. A larger budget or multiple bookings do not guarantee any particular ranking, views or sales. Bump and Highlight can work together on the same listing; multiple bumps do not add an extra bonus.

Where ads appear

The ad placements described appear on the home page and in relevant search and category results. Ads do not affect display or sorting in the wishlist, searches for a complete ISBN, seller profiles, listing comparisons or the cart. On an individual book page, the selected listing’s photos, description and purchase options remain the focus.

Signed-in users are not shown their own ads or ads from blocked accounts. Public listings from blocked accounts remain visible as usual. A Shelf does not broaden search terms or filters.

When does an interaction count?

An ad impression counts when at least half of the book card has been visible for at least one second, or when it is clicked. Only signed-in viewers count; your own interactions do not. For pay-per-click ads, at most one click is charged per account, book, booking and UTC day. The daily limit and total budget limit ad delivery and billing.

Sale-based advertising requires a confirmed link between an ad click and a purchase within 30 days. Visiting a Shelf does not trigger a fee for other books that were not clicked. Under My ads you can find views, clicks and attributed purchases.
